Medication Aide

INTRODUCTION

The Medication Aide Program is designed to prepare Nurse Aides and students for administration of medicines under supervision and guidance stipulated by the Texas Department of Human Services, Long-Term Care Division, Medication Aide Permit Program.


The Job of the Medication Aide

These are health professionals who administer medications to persons in state licensed care nursing homes, clinics and other health care facilities.

MISSION, GOALS, AND OBJECTIVES

The students will learn the following topics.

  • Procedures for preparation and administration of medications
  • Responsibility, control, accountability, and storage of medications
  • Use of reference material
  • Documentation of medications in residents’ clinical records
  • Lines of authority in the facility
  • Responsibilities and liabilities associated with the administration and safeguarding of medication
  • Allowable and prohibited practices of permit holders
  • Drug reactions and side effects of medications commonly administered to facility residents
  • Rules covering the medication aide training program.

COURSE & CURRICULUM

This program will consist inter-alia the following courses:

  • Introduction to Medication Aide & Basic Concepts
  • Demonstration Skills
  • Basic Principles of Medical Administration
  • Demonstration Skills
  • Drug Therapy of Common Disease Processes
  • Age Related Patient Medication Administration
  • Care Planning and Role of Medication Aide
  • Clinical Observation (Externship)      

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

  • Student must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess a high school diploma or GED.

REGISTRATION NEEDS

  • Driver’s License
  • Social Security Card.
